The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS GmbH (formerly: Institute for Epidemiology and Prevention Research GmbH (BIPS), Bremen Institute for Prevention Research and Social Medicine) is an independent, interdisciplinary epidemiology research institute, which is responsible for researching the causes of diseases and the prevention of diseases. In addition to working on research projects, his tasks also include the implementation of research results in practice and teaching. BIPS has been a member of the Leibniz Association since January 1, 2013 .

history

The BIPS was founded on January 1st, 1981 as a legally dependent research institute of the "Association for the Promotion of Scientific Research in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen eV" and was initially located at President-Kennedy-Platz in Bremen-Mitte . The director of the institute was the pharmacologist Eberhard Greiser, who had already made a name for himself in drug research in the 1970s.

The BIPS later moved its headquarters to the Bremen-Mitte Clinic and then to Grünenstrasse in Bremen's Neustadt district . Since April 1, 1998, the BIPS has been entrusted with the management of the registry of the epidemiological cancer registry in Bremen. In 2000, it finally moved to Linzer Straße to the Bremen Technology Park next to the University of Bremen .

In November 2003 the longstanding director of the institute, Greiser, left the company. His successor, Iris Pigeot, has headed the Statistics Department ( biometrics and IT) since 2001 and took up her position as the new director in March 2004.

On January 1, 2007, the BIPS became the central scientific institution at the University of Bremen. The BIPS has been an associated member of the Leibniz Association since the end of November 2008 . In 2010, the BIPS moved again, this time to the former building of the data center of the Bremen administration at Achterstraße 30 in the Horn-Lehe district of Bremen , which had been completely renovated for this purpose. On January 1, 2012, the institute was spun off from the university as a GmbH and renamed.
