Light air sports equipment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Germany, air sports equipment according to Section 1, Paragraph 4 LuftVZO is referred to as light air sports equipment (lL) as one and two-seat air sports equipment and with a maximum empty weight of 120 kg including harness and rescue equipment . These air sports equipment are exempt from type certification , for which the manufacturer has to demonstrate airworthiness .

The designation light air sports equipment is not an official formulation or a designation occurring in aviation law, but a common description of air sports equipment with the above technical description. In aviation law , reference is always made to air sports equipment in accordance with Section 1 (4) LuftVZO . This means that they are not a new category or class of air sports equipment, but enable easier approval and operation of this sub-group of air sports equipment. The basic division of air sports equipment into the categories of ultralight aircraft , hang gliders , paragliders , jump parachutes and gliders will therefore not change.

Jurisdiction

The Federal Ministry of Transport has passed on the performance of certain public tasks in connection with the use of the airspace by light air sports equipment in accordance with Section 31c LuftVG through the Commissioner Ordinance (BeauftrV) to the German Aero Club , German Ultralight Flight Association and German Hang Glider Association . These are:

  • Granting of permits and authorizations for aviation personnel
  • Issuing permits for training
  • Supervision of the operation of air sports equipment on airfields and grounds, if both are used exclusively for the operation of air sports equipment
  • Collection of costs according to the cost regulation of the aviation administration

Designs

The following are considered to be light air sports equipment:

up to an empty weight of 120 kg.

Light air sports equipment is exempt from type approval and traffic approval. However, the manufacturer must have the type tested by the Federal Ministry of Transport in accordance with § 31c LuftVG through the Commissioner Ordinance (BeauftrV) by one of the professional associations in a sample test in accordance with § 10a LuftGerPV . Therefore it is important for the safe operation of an air sports device to strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions in the operating manual of an air sports device. Unfortunately, it happens again and again that pilots, or test pilots from type test centers not commissioned according to § 31c LuftVG , disregard manufacturer instructions in operating manuals. Although no approval is required, the aviation federations offer voluntary registration and the issuing of a license plate so that the pilots can participate in aviation radio with a call sign .

Pilot license

Anyone who is in possession of a valid pilot's license for air sports equipment operators for light air sports equipment is entitled to drive light air sports equipment. There are two ways to do this:

  • People who have the same category for air sports equipment greater than 120 kg take-off weight require an additional license for the light air sports equipment, which can usually be purchased from the professional association without examination.
  • Without any flying experience, the trainee pilot has to go through flight training based on aerial sports equipment with an empty weight of more than 120 kg, sometimes using this aerial sports equipment and then completed with the light air sports equipment. A theoretical and practical test must be taken.

As a special feature, no medical certificate is required for training and using the light air sports equipment . The license is granted for an unlimited period.
