Leif Erland Andersson ( pronunciation : [ ˌlɛjːf ˈanːdəʁsɔn ]; born November 4, 1943 in Falkenberg ; † May 4, 1979 ibid) was a Swedish astronomer .

Life

Leif Andersson studied at Lund University . In 1968 he received an assistant position at an observatory in Sicily . He then attended the University of Indiana to complete his doctorate. He later worked at the University of Arizona Lunar & Planetary Science Laboratory in Tucson , Arizona . Andersson calculated that the first observable passages of Pluto and Charon would take place in the early 1980s, but did not live long enough to see for himself.

Andersson was considered a child prodigy because he won the Swedish television quiz 10,000-kronorsfrågan ("The 10,000-Crown Question") twice, the first time at the age of 16.

After his early death from lymph cancer at the age of 35, the Andersson crater on the moon was named after him in 1985 and the asteroid (9223) Leifandersson in 2000 .
