Leigh Canham

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leigh Trevor Canham (* 1958 ) is a British physicist and university professor . He dedicated his scientific work to the study of porous silicon (pSi), whose electrical and optical properties he revealed. He is also the founder of two medical technology companies that promote the medical benefits of pSi, which he also discovered, and sell corresponding products. Canham has been an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham since 1999 .

Because of his frequent citations , Canham has been considered a possible winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics since 2012 .

biography

Canham studied at University College London , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 . After another four years of study at King's College which followed promotion to Ph.D.

In 1986 Canham began his scientific work as a Higher Scientific Officer in the research department (now: QinetiQ ) of the UK Department of Defense . After he was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in 1988 , he succeeded in 1990 proving that porous silicon is capable of electroluminescence . The pSi was stimulated to emit visible light by applying an electrical voltage .

In 1995, he discovered that pSi was biodegradable and non-toxic to the human body, which opened up a range of medical uses for the material. Canham then developed a nanostructured version of the pSi, BioSilicon . The structure of BioSilicon makes it possible to load the material with drugs , genes or vaccines and to release it in the body in a controlled manner over a longer period of time.

As a result, founded in December 2000 Canham pSiMedica to open up to more research, and took over the scientific management of the Group. A little later he sold the company to pSivida , where it was incorporated into their corporate structure and Canham continued his work. Eventually, he left pSivida and started IntrinsiQ Materials , where he specialized in the development of nutritional therapy related to pSi as chief scientist .

In 2011 he was awarded second place in the small and medium-sized companies section of the European Inventor Award .
