Leila Aboulela

Leila Aboulela (* 1964 in Cairo , Arabic القاهرة, ' ليلى ابوالعلا' ) is a Sudanese writer.

Life

Leila Aboulela is the daughter of an Egyptian and a Sudanese. She was born in Cairo in 1964 and came to Khartoum when she was six weeks old , where she lived until 1987. She attended the Khartoum American School , where she learned English, and studied economics at the University of Khartoum . She earned an M.Phil. from the London School of Economics and Political Science .

She is married and has three children. In 1990 she moved with her family to Scotland , where she began writing in 1992 while teaching at Aberdeen College and later at the University of Aberdeen . After 2000 she lived with her family in Jakarta (Indonesia), Dubai , Abu Dhabi and Doha before returning to Aberdeen in 2012 .
