Leland is a city in Washington County , Mississippi , United States . Its population was 5502 at the census (as of 2000).
Located in the heart of the blues region of the Mississippi Delta on the banks of Deer Creek, the city has produced a number of nationally and regionally distinguished blues musicians. Highway 61, famous for being mentioned in several blues recordings, runs through the middle of the city and gives its name to the local blues museum.
In Leland is a small museum that commemorates Jim Henson , the inventor of the Muppet Show . Henson was born in neighboring Greenville and invented the frog in Leland Kermit .
