Leland Devon Melvin (born February 15, 1964 in Lynchburg , Virginia ) is a retired American astronaut .
education
Melvin graduated from high school in 1982 and then studied chemistry. In 1986 he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond . The University of Virginia awarded him a Masters in Materials Science five years later .
From 1989 Melvin worked at NASA's Langley Research Center . Using glass fiber sensors, he researched new methods for materials research. After five years he was assigned to the X-33 program.
Astronaut activity
In June 1998, Melvin was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA . After two years of training as a mission specialist , he oversaw the selection program for astronaut trainers (Educator Astronaut Program).
STS-122
From the summer of 2006 Melvin trained for his first space flight. He was a member of the crew of the STS-122 shuttle mission , which carried out the mission in February 2008. The main payload was the European Columbus space laboratory .
STS-129
Melvin was nominated for the STS-129 space shuttle mission in September 2008 . He started on November 16, 2009 with the space shuttle Atlantis for a short stay to the International Space Station (ISS) .
NASA educational program
From 2010, Melvin was Associate Administrator for Education in charge of NASA's education program. He left NASA in February 2014.
