The Ravadasjoki flows into the Lemmenjoki as a waterfall |
The Lemmenjoki is a 67 km long river in Finnish Lapland .
geography
The Lemmenjoki springs from the lake Lemmekäsjärvi in northwest Finland and flows from southwest to northeast in the direction of Lake Inari . Initially the river flows through a moor landscape, later through a lonely, almost uninhabited low mountain range with abandoned gold rush settlements. The river meanders strongly before it flows into Lake Paatari . It flows through the Lemmenjoki National Park .
history
In the 1870s there was a "gold rush" on Lemmenjoki and neighboring Ivalojoki . Gold is still being mined there today . There are currently around 60-70 gold prospectors holding claims in which they are searching for gold. Since they can only work for about four to six months depending on the weather, the prospectors have to hurry to earn enough money to survive the extremely long winter. Winter usually lasts from October or November to around the end of April or even well into May.
Touristic
The Lemmenjoki is a popular river with moderate difficulty for multi-day canoe trips.
