Lena Kidd

Eleanor "Lena" Kidd (* 1924 ; † November 21, 2003 ) was a British jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ) and band leader .

Live and act

At the age of 13, Kidd first learned the accordion with Jimmy Shand , in whose band her father was a drummer. She later switched to the clarinet and alto saxophone and performed with the Arcadian Dance Band . In 1945 she became a member of Ivy Benson's band , where she switched to the tenor saxophone. She toured Germany, the Netherlands, the Middle East and Egypt with the band von Benson, with which the recordings were made, until she joined the women's band Gracie Cole Orchestra in 1953 with trumpeter Gracie Cole . In 1956, back in Scotland, she founded the all-female Lena Kidd Quartet in Leven (Fife) , from which the Lena Kidd Seven later emerged. With this band she was touring Germany and France. In 1970 she married the trumpeter Ray Willis. After his death in 1978 she moved to Fife, where she lived until her death in 2003. In the field of jazz she was involved in three recording sessions between 1947 and 1949.
