Lennox Tower

Lennox Tower is the ruin of a residential tower in Lymphoy on the banks of the Water of Leith . The 15th century Tower House is between Balerno and Currie , about 7 miles southwest of the Scottish city of Edinburgh .

history

The tower was built by the Earls of Lennox , who were part of the Stewart family . Mary Queen of Scots and Regent Morton visited the castle while King James VI. used it as a hunting lodge. George Heriot , goldsmith and founder of George Heriot's School , later acquired the Lennox Tower. The castle eventually deteriorated to the point where it became a rock garden.

description

The castle was a tower with a rectangular floor plan. Today only the ground floor, with the entrance to the northeast corner, and the foundation of a platform staircase remain. The north and west walls of the tower are around 2.4 meters high, while the remains of the wall on the other two sides are less than 0.6 meters high.

There was a tunnel from Tower House to Lymphoy House . Lennox Tower is located on a ledge. To the south of this is a ditch about two meters deep , where there was probably a curtain wall . It is believed that the property was surrounded by a fence and that there were other buildings between the tower and the moat.

Lennox Tower is a Scheduled Monument .

Ghosts

The tower is said to be haunted by a "white woman". It is said that she is the daughter-in-law of the Lymphoy House family. After her husband was killed in battle, she turned to his family for support, which she never accepted. When they rejected her, she and her child died in the snow. Since then, a "white woman" has been seen sneaking around the area several times.
