Currie ( Gaelic : Currach ) is a suburb of Edinburgh located ten kilometers southwest of the center of the city. The village belongs to the administrative area of the City of Edinburgh. In the northeast, the place is bounded by Juniper Green , also a suburb of Edinburgh.

history

There is no generally accepted thesis as to the origin of the name Currie. It is believed that it could come from Gaelic , but there are also voices that claim that it comes from Breton or Anglo-Saxon. Since there are two neighboring towns that derive their names from Breton and Gaelic, both roots are possible for Currie.

The earliest evidence of settlement in the area around Currie is in the Bronze Age . Archaeologists found a razor that is around 3800 years old. There are a few written documents that prove the existence of curries for the Middle Ages and early modern times. One of the earliest dates back to 1249 when Robert of Kildeleith became Chancellor of Scotland . Robert the Bruce , King of Scotland, gave the place to Riccarton in 1315 as a wedding gift. In 1392 the land passed to the family of Bishop Wardlaw. In the early 17th century, Ludwig Craig received the land until it passed to the Gibson Craigs line in 1818.

There has been a Christian center in the Currie area for over a thousand years. In 1018 the Archdeacons of Lothian settled around Currie. While Currie is not on Bartholomew's 13th-century map, contemporary sources refer to it as a favorite hunting ground for the lords and knights of Edinburgh Castle.

In the period between 1921 and 1951, Currie was provided with a town hall and several private buildings. Back then, the city became popular as a pleasant suburb, which further promoted housing construction. Currie College was built in 1966 and underwent a thorough renovation in 1997. In March 1972, the Curries Center was listed as a historical monument.

The population of Curries in 1995 was 6343 people.
