The ballad that is still best known today because of its eeriness is Lenore by Gottfried August Bürger .

Edgar Allan Poe took up this theme again in 1841 with the story Eleonora and in 1843 with the poem Lenore . Also in his most famous poem, The Raven , she appears as the narrator's late lover.

The title character from Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl , a comic by the American comic artist Roman Dirge , is loosely based on Poe's story.
