Roman Dirge (born April 29, 1972 , real name Roman Elliot ) is an American comic book artist and writer, illustrator and magician . He became known for his macabre, black-humored comics. His best known work is Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl .

Career

Dirge was already told during his school days that with his simple drawing style he would never make it to a professional draftsman. Hence, he decided to become a professional magician. But after a few years he turned back to drawing. His three-year-old cousin's scribble inspired him to write Lenore in 1992 . He worked on this idea and created his first comic. Initially, he had to borrow the $ 600 needed to print his comic from his business partner Mike Murphy to get the project off the ground.

His first comic appeared under the name Xenophobe . In addition, Lenore was printed in Black Market Magazine . Xenophobe published six self -published editions until Dan Vado of independent publisher Slave Labor Graphics noticed Dirge at the Alternative Press Expo in San Diego and signed him. This gave Roman Dirge the opportunity to professionally draw comics and have them marketed in large numbers.

In the meantime, Roman Dirge has made a name for himself in the US comics scene, which is also reflected in numerous guest works with comparable artists such as Serena Valentino. Dirge has already been nominated four times for the renowned Eisner Award for his works . He also worked on the Nickelodeon animated series Invader Zim . In February 2009, the first Lenore collection was published in German by UBooks . Further editions of the series are planned there.

style

Dirges comics are exclusively black and white. His drawings appear bizarre and simple, almost like those of a child. The look of Dirges Comics is comparable to that of the puppet films by Tim Burton or related comics such as Gloomcookie or Nightmares and Fairy Tales by Serena Valentino . Some of his works are written entirely in rhyme, like children's poems. However, his comics are not suitable for children. The actions are too gloomy, too macabre and too cynical and the visual representation is sometimes too brutal. In terms of content, his works deal with the atrocities of everyday life, which are depicted with a lot of black humor or are dark fairy tales. There are, for example, beings like dead girls, a vampire who has been turned into a doll as a punishment, a ghost who lives in a spider, a person who is turned into a pumpkin and is eaten, bed bugs that eat children or a reindeer, who is in love with a bee.
