Eleanor
Eleonore is a female given name .
Origin and meaning
The meaning of the name Eleonore is unclear. Eleanor of Aquitaine , actually Old French Alienor, is the first known name bearer. The following explanations are discussed:
- The meaning of the ancient Provencal name Aliénor is also unclear. Probably the first part of the name belongs to the Germanic * alja- 'foreign, different'. The explanation assumes that Eleanor of Aquitaine , old French Alienor, was actually called Aenòr , but was called alia Aenor ('the other Aenòr') to distinguish it from her mother of the same name .
- The name Eleonore can also be derived from Arabic : where isأَلْلّٰهُ نُورِي, DMG Aḷḷāhu nūr-ī with the meaning 'God is my light'. The name came to Spain through the Moors , from there it spread to France , so that it spread to England through Eleanor of Aquitaine .
- As a final explanation, Aliénor is seen as the equivalent of Helene .
- Especially in the 19th century, Eleanor was associated with the ancient Greek eleos ( Greek ἔλεος ) (“mercy”, “mercy”).
The name has been traceable in Germany for more than 500 years. Through William Shakespeare's works, Eleonore became popular in Germany and, not least, through Eleonore Prochaska became popular.
