Eleonore von Bretzenheim (born December 9, 1771 , † December 23, 1832 ) was a Countess of Bretzenheim and, by marriage, Countess zu Leiningen-Guntersblum .

Life

Eleonore was an illegitimate daughter of Elector Karl Theodor von Bayern (1724–1799) from his relationship with Josepha von Heydeck (1748–1771), an actress and dancer at the Mannheim Theater, who was promoted to the rank of "Countess von Heydeck" by the Elector “Was raised.

Karl Theodor, who had no legitimate offspring, looked after his children born out of wedlock very lovingly. In addition to her twin sister Friederike , there was also her brother Karl August , sister Karoline Josepha and Eleonore's half-sister Karoline Franziska , all of whom grew up in Mannheim's Palais Bretzenheim and received piano lessons from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . In 1774 Eleonore and her full siblings were raised to the rank of Imperial Counts of Bretzenheim.

Marriage projects with princes from the houses of Modena, Fürstenberg and Mecklenburg fell apart and the 16-year-old married Count Wilhelm Carl zu Leiningen-Guntersblum (1737-1809) on November 21, 1787 . Eleanor detested her husband, who was 34 years older, and before the marriage Eleanor had had a love affair with Baron von Pfeil, her brother's mentor, whom she accepted with a substantial gift of money. Eleonore's dowry was well over 300,000 guilders.

In the turmoil of the coalition wars , Eleonore was able to keep Guntersblum with lock out unscathed through her diplomatic skill . Their marriage was divorced in 1801 by the Mainz tribunal, whose legitimacy was, however, contested by Wilhelm Carl. The reason for the divorce was Eleonore's relationship with a French general.
