Eleanor Powell
Eleanor Torrey Powell (born November 21, 1912 in Springfield , Massachusetts , † February 11, 1982 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American dancer , singer and actress .
Life
Eleanor Powell was discovered at the age of 11 in a Vaudeville children's revue by Gus Edwards, who brought her to Broadway in the 1920s. In 1935, her precision and speed in tap dancing earned her the title of “world champion in tap dancing”. In the same year she also played her first major role in a Hollywood musical (in a film adaptation of George Sands Scandale ).
This was followed by Broadway Melody of 1936 , Born to Dance (1936), Rosalie (1937), Broadway Melody of 1938 , Honolulu and Broadway Melody of 1940 . Her most famous tap dance sequence together with Fred Astaire to a piece of music penned by Cole Porter : “Begin The Beguine” also comes from the latter musical .
In 1943 she married the actor Glenn Ford , gave birth to a son (Peter Ford) in 1945 and shortly after the birth of her son gave up dancing and acting in order to devote herself entirely to family life. She returned to the screen in 1950 for one last musical, this time with Esther Williams in Dutchess Of Idaho , but then turned to her artistic roots for many years and performed on stages and in clubs and revues. In 1959 she divorced from Ford. In later years she became increasingly interested in religion and used her strength to charity events.
Eleanor Powell was also immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
