Eleanor Sterling

Eleonore Sterling (born as Eleonore Oppenheimer March 10, 1925 in Heidelberg ; died December 27, 1968 in Ebersteinburg ) was a German political scientist.

Life

As a 13-year-old Jewish woman, she fled to relatives in the USA in 1938 due to growing anti-Semitism . Her parents were murdered in the Gurs concentration camp in southern France. She married A. Cecil Sterling in 1942.

In 1949 she published her dissertation at Columbia University in New York on anti-Semitism in Germany from 1789-1819 . Back in Germany she did her PhD in Dr. phil. at Frankfurt University with her study on the early history of anti-Semitism in Germany (1815–1850) , which was published in 1956 as a book with the title “He is like you”. She was also co-editor of the "Documents on the History of Frankfurt Jews 1933–1945".

In 1959 she received the Leo Baeck Prize of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. In the year she died, she was appointed professor of political science at the Osnabrück University of Education. The Eleonore-Sterling-Strasse named after her exists in Frankfurt-Eschersheim.
