Eleonore zu Stolberg-Wernigerode
Countess Eleonore zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (* February 20, 1835 in Gedern , † September 18, 1903 in Ilsenburg ) was Princess Reuss zu Köstritz and a German song poet by marriage .
Life
It came from the ruling main line of the Count's House of Stolberg-Wernigerode . Her father was Hereditary Count Hermann zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , the son of the ruling Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . In autumn 1838 the von Gedern family moved to Ilsenburg. In 1855 she married the widowed Prince Heinrich LXXIV. Reuss zu Köstritz (1798–1886), who belonged to a non-ruling branch of the younger Reuss line . At the time of the marriage, Heinrich was already 57 years old. Eleonore followed her husband to the Oberlausitzer Gut Jänkendorf . After his death in 1886 she returned to Ilsenburg, where she lived with her elderly mother, Countess Emma zu Erbach-Fürstenau († 1889). In the Ilsenburg parish, von Reuss was active as a diaconal and literary figure. Her grave is still today in the cemetery next to the entrance to the Marienkirche there. The saying on the grave stone is a part of verse 13 of the song If God is for me, kick of Paul Gerhardt : "The sun, I laugh, my Lord Jesus Christ; what makes me sing is what is in heaven. "
Works
The year ends silently
At Christmas 1857 Eleonore received the news that her friend, the writer Marie Nathusius , had died. She dealt with her sadness and bewilderment in the poem, published in 1867, The year ends silently . In it she processes motifs from Psalm 126 LUT . In the text she expresses her hope for eternal life. The song is contained in the current Protestant hymn book of the German-speaking Protestant regional churches (EG 63).
I've been through the world
In this poem (set to music by Karl Kuhlo ) Reuss emphasizes the futility of human search and creation; they did not lead to real peace. She expresses her certainty of a rest that can be found through Christ's death on the cross - "for everyone, far and near in the wounds of the Lamb of God on the cross on Golgotha".
