Eleonore von Anjou (French Éléonore d'Anjou ; Italian Eleonora d'Angiò ; * 1289 in Naples ; † August 10, 1341 in the monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena near Nicolosi ) was Queen of Sicily from 1303 to 1337 as the wife of Frederick II .

Life

Born in the house of Anjou, Eleanor was the third daughter of the Neapolitan King Charles II and his wife Maria of Hungary . In 1299, when she was ten , she was betrothed to Philippe de Toucy , Lord of Terza, but this vow was canceled by Pope Boniface VIII in early 1300 due to the young age of the princess.

As part of the peace of Caltabellotta , concluded on August 31, 1302, which was supposed to settle the conflict between Eleonore's father and King Frederick II of Sicily for supremacy in the southern Italian Mediterranean region, Eleonore was married to Frederick II in Messina in May 1303 . Charles II of Naples recognized his son-in-law as King of Sicily for life.

Eleonore von Anjou and her husband had nine children:

On June 25, 1337 Eleanor of Anjou became a widow. In her last years she led a secluded life and died on August 10, 1341 at the age of 52 in the monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena. She was buried in the church of San Maria dell'Immacolata in Catania .
