William II (Athens)
Wilhelm II of Sicily (* 1312 ; † August 22, 1338 ) was Duke of Athens and Neopatria . He was a son of King Frederick II of Sicily and Eleanor of Anjou , daughter of King Charles II of Naples .
Wilhelm succeeded his older brother Manfred as Duke of Athens in 1317 . Because of his underage, his older half-brother Alfonso Fadrique ruled there as vicar. In 1319, after a campaign of conquest in Thessaly, he founded the Duchy of Neopatria, which was united with that of Athens. In 1335 Wilhelm and his half-brother were excommunicated by the Pope because he did not recognize the Catalan-Aragonese rule in Athens.
Wilhelm died without ever having entered his duchy and was buried in Palermo . According to his will, his younger brother Johann followed him .
