Eleonore Marie von Anhalt-Bernburg (born August 7, 1600 in Amberg ; † July 17, 1657 in Strelitz ) was a princess of Anhalt-Bernburg and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg-Güstrow .

Life

Eleonore Marie was a daughter of Prince Christian I of Anhalt-Bernburg (1568–1639) from his marriage to Anna (1579–1624), daughter of Count Arnold III. from Bentheim . Under the name Die Constantin , Eleonore Marie was co-founder and second head of the Académie des Loyales , which is considered the female counterpart of the Fruitful Society .

She married on May 7, 1626 in Güstrow Duke Johann Albrecht II of Mecklenburg-Güstrow (1590-1636). After the death of her Calvinist husband, Eleonore Marie took over the reign of her underage son as stipulated in the Duke's will. After just three days, her regency and guardianship for Gustav Adolf were disputed by her Lutheran brother-in-law, Duke Adolf Friedrich , even though the late duke had expressly excluded his Lutheran brother from assuming guardianship in his will. Eleonore Marie resisted the claim, but on May 4, 1636 the estates submitted to Adolf Friedrich.

Adolf Friedrich protested against his brother's will, largely swapped the government in Güstrow, leaving only Andreas Buggenhagen in office. He took massive action against the Reformed Church in the Güstrow region. In 1637 the Hereditary Prince was forcibly separated from his Calvinist mother. None of the Calvinists remaining in the country were allowed to participate in Eleonore Marie's private church services and the Dowager Duchess was referred to her widow's residence in Strelitz. Emperor Ferdinand III. decreed in favor of Eleonore Maries, but Adolf Friedrich continued the trials and also involved foreign powers in the matter. Eleonore Marie finally renounced her rights in 1645 and died twelve years later on her Wittum in Strelitz. She was buried in Güstrow Cathedral .
