Landgravine Eleonore Katharine von Hessen-Eschwege

Eleonore Katharine von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (born May 17, 1626 in Stegeborg ; † March 3, 1692 in Osterholz ) was a Countess Palatine of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg and by marriage Landgravine of Hesse-Eschwege .

Life

Eleonore Katharine was a daughter of Count Palatine Johann Kasimir von Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (1589–1652) from his marriage to Princess Katharina Wasa of Sweden (1584–1638), daughter of King Karl IX. of Sweden . Eleonore's brother became King of Sweden in 1654 as Charles X Gustav .

She married Landgrave Friedrich von Hessen-Eschwege (1617–1655) in Stockholm in 1646 . The fact that she had a relationship with a French musician before the wedding and was even pregnant by him apparently did not prevent the wedding. Because the Swedish king was unable to pay Eleonore's dowry of 17,000 thalers and the associated bonds of a further 10,000 thalers, Friedrich received the offices of Osterholz and Stotel and the rule of Beverstedtermühlen as compensation . After the death of her husband, Eleonore Katharine was confirmed by Sweden as heiress. While her son-in-law, the Baron von Lilienburg, administered the Stotel office, Eleonore resided in Osterholz, where she took care of the local social issues. So she hired the first doctor and the first teacher in Osterholz and set up a pharmacy. After her death, her body was transferred to the princely crypt in Eschwege in a simple wooden coffin for lack of money.

Remarks

  1. Maybe Margarete is the child from the affair with the musician. According to literature, Eleonore Katharine Friedrich confessed her affair in early 1647, when the pregnancy could no longer be concealed.
