Christine von Hessen (born October 30, 1648 in Kassel , † March 18, 1702 in Bevern ), from the Hessen-Eschwege branch of the Hessen-Rotenburg branch of the House of Hesse , was by marriage from 1667 Duchess of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern .

origin

Christine was the second of six children of Landgrave Friedrich ("the great Fritz") of Hessen-Eschwege, the fourth of the seven sons of Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel from his (second) marriage to Juliane von Nassau-Dillenburg , and his wife Eleonore Katharina von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg , the sister of the later Swedish King Karl X. Gustav , was born on October 30, 1648 in Kassel. Little is known about her childhood. The first years she grew up with her mother in Eschwege . After the death of her father, who died on the Swedish side in the war against Poland in 1655 , his younger brother Ernst I inherited Friedrich's share in the " Rotenburger Quart ", and Christine's mother moved with her children to her widow's residence in the former Osterholz monastery near Bremen .

Marriage and offspring

On November 25, 1667, she married Ferdinand Albrecht I (* May 22, 1636; † April 23, 1687), Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern from the House of Welfs, in Eschwege . The Eschwege Castle was pledged as a dowry for Christine to her husband's family, and only in 1713 triggered again. However, the marriage apparently suffered from the husband's morbid jealousy and “whimsical” behavior that even included physical violence.

The following children were born from the marriage:

Living in Bevern and Bremen

After her marriage, Christine lived with her husband in the small town of Bevern in the castle there . Her husband showed a considerable interest in cultural life; For example, on Christine's 30th birthday, a “Comedy Hall” was inaugurated with a commissioned play.

Christine herself kept a small library and was involved in handicrafts. A Vanitas representation she made can still be seen in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum today .

Ferdinand Albrecht traveled frequently, and Christine and her mother accompanied him on some. Among other things, they visited Sweden (1667 and 1670/71), the Vienna Imperial Court (1674/75) and often Eschwege. Relationships with the Swedish royal family existed in particular because Christine's mother was the sister of the Swedish king.

From 1681 the couple lived in the former Osterholz monastery, the former widow's residence of Christine's mother, and then at the Domshof in Bremen until they returned to Bevern in 1686. Christine lived there after her husband's death in 1687 and until her death in 1702.
