August Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern (born December 29, 1677 in Bevern , † July 2, 1704 near Donauwörth ), one of the Dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg , was major general of the Lower Saxony Empire .

Life

He was born in 1677 as the third son of Ferdinand Albrechts I of Braunschweig-Bevern († 1687) and Landgravine Christine of Hessen-Eschwege . After the death of his father he received his further education at the Wolfenbüttel Knight Academy Rudolph-Antoniana, founded in 1687 by his uncle Anton Ulrich . In 1692 he made a trip to Stockholm. He decided early on for army service and took part in King Wilhelm III's campaign in 1694 . from England in the Spanish Netherlands. Back in Wolfenbüttel , he was appointed by Duke Anton Ulrich as colonel of his body regiment, as which he took part in the siege of Namur in 1695 during the War of the Palatinate Succession . In the following year he was given command of Wolfenbüttel troops belonging to the Reichsarmee , which he led against French units. In 1696 and 1697 he toured Italy with his younger brother Ferdinand Albrecht . After the Peace of Rijswijk , August Ferdinand joined the imperial army and took part in a campaign against the Turks under Eugene of Savoy in Hungary. During the War of the Spanish Succession , as Imperial Major General, he commanded the contingent of the Lower Saxon district under Margrave Ludwig von Baden and conquered the castle and town of Friedberg. During the fighting against France he fell in 1704 in the Schellenberg hill near Donauwörth at the age of 26. He was buried in the Brunswick Cathedral .
