The Lenox Lounge is a jazz club in Harlem , New York City . It was built in 1939 in the Art Deco style. The club is divided into two different areas: the bar room and the so-called zebra room , the wall decoration of which is reminiscent of the pattern of zebras. While the Bar Room is open daily, the Zebra Room is mainly used for jazz events. The Lenox Lounge became famous through performances by many well-known jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday , Miles Davis and John Coltrane . The writers James Baldwin and Langston Hughes as well as the political activist Malcolm X are said to have counted among his regular guests . The club fell into disrepair in the 1960s, but was renovated in 1999. Since then, there have been daily concerts again (under the musical direction of Danny Mixon ), on the weekends with internationally known jazz musicians. It has served as a film location several times, including the feature film Shaft - Still Questions? and the television series White Collar (2010) and NYC 22 (2012). Madonna shot scenes from her music video "Secret" here.

In 2012, reports surfaced that the club was threatened with closure because the landlord increased the rent by 100% from $ 10,000 to $ 20,000. The owner, Alvin Reed, then announced that the club would close at the end of the year.

The Lenox Lounge was closed on December 31, 2012, the red and gold front and all the illuminated letters in the name, according to the building owner, were illegally dismantled by the operator Alvin Reed. The owner of the name Lenox Lounge and its operator, Alvin Reed, announced that they would reopen the Lenox Lounch a few streets away (333 Lenox Avenue). The new tenant also wants to continue the Lenox Lounge (under a new name) in the old style.

The building was demolished in 2017 and replaced by a new building.
