Danny Mixon

Daniel Asbury "Danny" Mixon (born August 19, 1949 in Harlem , New York City ) is an American jazz pianist and organist.

Live and act

Mixon first prepared for a career as a tap dancer . He therefore took lessons from Ruth Williams before attending the High School of Performing Arts, where he focused on dance, before switching to piano after the impression of a visit to the Apollo Theater , where he saw jazz musicians. In 1966 he accompanied Patti Labelle with trumpeter Sam Brown's band , and then played with Joe Lee Wilson between 1967 and 1970 . In 1971 and 1972 he performed regularly with Betty Carter . He was also a member of Frank Foster's big band , which he still belongs to today. Then he led his own trio and recorded with the Piano Choir ; he has also appeared with Kenny Dorham , Cecil Payne , the Jazz Messengers , Grant Green , Pharoah Sanders (1975), Joe Williams , Eddie Jefferson and Dee Dee Bridgewater . In 1976 Mixon succeeded Don Pullen as a member of the Charles Mingus quintet , with whom he toured internationally. After Mingus' death he played with Dannie Richmond , with whom he was also in Europe, toured with Yusef Lateef and then worked for Lionel Hampton for a few years . Then he played with Hank Crawford . He is the musical director of the Lenox Lounge in Harlem and performs regularly with his trio in New York.

In 2004 Mixon was honored by the Harlem Jazz Museum .
