Leo Esser (born February 17, 1907 in Düsseldorf , † after 1936) was a German diver . He was multiple German master and European champion in jumping and took part in the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1936 .

Life and athletic career

Leo Esser trained at the Gut Naß sports club in Iserlohn . Between 1931 and 1934 he was German champion in combined jumping four times in a row. In 1932, at the age of 25, he also won the German championship in jumping from the 3-meter board.

With the Europa , Esser crossed
the Atlantic with the German Olympic team in July 1932 .

In the same year he also qualified for participation in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles . On July 10, 1932, he and the German Olympic team in Bremen embarked on the six-day cruise on the modern, fast steamship Europa to New York . The weightlifter Rudolf Ismayr , the boxer Josef Schleinkofer and the diver Olga Jordan traveled together with Esser ; Also on board were the Olympians from Austria, the German sports journalist Kurt Doerry and the press illustrator Emil Stumpp from Berlin. In 1932, Stumpp made a portrait drawing of Esser with the title “Portrait of the Swimmer Leo Esser”, which is now a print in the collection of the German Historical Museum in Berlin. Esser finished the jumping competition in Los Angeles as fifth out of thirteen participants from seven countries.

In 1934 he won the gold medal in jumping at the European Swimming Championships in Magdeburg in 1934 . Adolf Hitler personally congratulated him on his victory . A preserved black and white photo with the inscription "The Führer welcomes the European champion Leo Esser - July 1934" testifies to this event.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin , Leo Esser was sixth among 23 participants from fourteen countries.

At the end of the 1930s, Esser switched to the swimming club SC Aegir Uerdingen 07 , where the successful top athlete was seen as a figurehead for the club. No information is available about his further life after the end of his sporting career; The date and place of his death are also not known.
