Leo Stöcklin (born February 23, 1803 in Hofstetten ; † February 21, 1873 in the Mariastein Monastery ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk , composer, organist and abbot of the Mariastein Monastery.

Life

P. Leo Stöcklin (baptismal name Johann Baptist) was the child of the teacher and organist Johann Stöcklin and Anna Maria Stöcklin, née Hermann. His sister M. Bernarda Stöcklin (1810–1872; OSB Kloster Fahr) and his stepbrothers P. Konrad (Bernhard) Stöcklin (1813–1889; OSB Kloster Einsiedeln ) and P. Adalbert (Alois) Stöcklin (1816–1889) belong to the Stöcklin family. 1890; OSB Mariastein Monastery) also followed the monastic vocation.

Father Leo Stöcklin attended grammar school (monastery school) in Mariastein and made his profession there on November 1st, 1822 . He was ordained a subdeacon on May 11, 1826, a priest on June 9, 1827, and celebrated his primacy on June 24. After his ordination , Father Leo Stöcklin was a teacher, and from 1839 also head of the monastery school. From 1832 to 1851 he was the collegiate bandmaster and organist. During this time, the large and small organs of the monastery church were rebuilt under his aegis; his knowledge of organ building also brought him to Germany as an expert.

It is not known in which way the future abbot Leo Stöcklin studied music and acquired the compositional craft. The fact that he was already composing as a young brother is evidenced by the autograph of his Mass in C major for solos, choir and orchestra from 1826 in the Mariastein monastery music collection . Through his work as editor of the church music journal Recueil de Musique pour l'église et l'école (published in Strasbourg) and his collaboration on the Journal de Musique religieuse (Mulhouse 1860–1864), his church music works were widely distributed in printed records.

In October 1851, Father Leo Stöcklin became pastor and provost in St. Pantaleon and held this office until 1864. During his tenure, the church choir was rebuilt as a result of the collapse of the choir ceiling, the blessing of a new altar and the purchase of a new organ . In 1864 Leo Stöcklin came to the Beinwil Monastery as governor . On February 28, 1867 he was elected 11th abbot of Mariastein and there on March 3, 1867 he was appointed abbot.

With the assumption of the office as pastor and provost in St. Pantaleon and as governor in Beinwil, the compositional work of Father Leo Stöcklin was noticeably restricted. After his election as Abbot of Mariastein it came to a complete standstill. As abbot of the monastery, he managed to get the Solothurn government to reduce the special tax on monasteries and monasteries in favor of the public school system. During his tenure, various renovations were carried out on the monastery buildings. Until his death on February 21, 1873, however, he was again active as an organist in Mariastein.

Works

Leo Stöcklin's compositional oeuvre is extensive, spanning the period from 1823 to 1863. In Mariastein's book of professions, 299 editions of musical works by Leo Stöcklin are listed.
