The place Sensweiler is first mentioned in a doubted document in 975. The church is first mentioned in 1273 and was probably consecrated to St. Nicholas before the Reformation . The patronage was sold by Wilhelm von Manderscheid to the wild count before 1343 and from then on belonged to the wild count's office of Wildenburg with the official seat at the castle of the same name . When the Reformation was introduced around 1550, the parish still included Schauren, Kempfeld and the Wildburg part of Bruchweiler. At the beginning of the 19th century the community grew so that two pastors were hired side by side. The division into Sensweiler - Bruchweiler and Schauren - Kempfeld took place in 1840. The community was independent until the pastor Gundel, who was introduced in 1951, retired.

Architecture and equipment

altar

The hall church is a quarry stone building with a choir facing east. There is a pointed triumphal arch between the choir and nave. Together both have a length of 15.90 m. The greatest width is 7 m, the height in the nave is 4.40 m and in the choir 4.05 m. The ship is closed at the top with a flat beam ceiling. It has a flat arched door on the south side with a protective roof supported by two wooden pillars.

Eighteenth-century furnishings include a pulpit with rococo carvings and painted pictures of the evangelists, a three-winged western gallery and tombstones of pastor Johann Sebastian Kremer (died 1711) and his two daughters. In the interior of the church there are still glass windows - u. a. a stern-looking Martin Luther.

tower

The tower carrying the bells is the most ancient of the choir tower churches in the Birkenfeld district . It has two sound openings on each of the long sides and one sound opening on each of the narrow sides. It is covered by a simple gable roof. Two pairs of ancient rough-worked faces - a man with a beard and a woman with a headband or hoop are attached to the outside of the tower.

Bells

The tower hides a peal of three bells. According to a wax thread inscription, the oldest bell dates from the time the tower was built in the 12th century and is one of the oldest preserved bells in Rhineland-Palatinate. The older of the other two bells is the work of Master Daniel and dates from 1615, the younger bell from 1671 is the work of Mathias Cromel.
