Building history

The new church was financed by the Evangelical Church Building Association (Berlin), which then gave it to the German Emperor Wilhelm II . Another not insignificant part of the money came from the private fortune of the emperor himself. The architect of the church, Franz Schwechten, had previously designed the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin .

Wilhelm II was personally present for the inauguration of the church on October 15, 1913.

Until 1945 the Church of the Redeemer belonged to the House of Hohenzollern ; the evangelical congregation of Gerolstein enjoyed hospitality in it. After the war, the church was donated to the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .

Furnishing

Choir and altar

The interior of the church is lavishly furnished with extensive gold mosaics, round arches and a dominating dome - especially for a church in the diaspora . The mosaic decoration comes from the Hanoverian church painter Hermann Schaper and the Oldenburger Friedrich Schwarting (1883-1918). The painting of the church was entrusted to the Godesberg decorative painter Ludwig Ziercke , who came from Pomerania . The gold mosaics were carried out by the Puhl & Wagner company . All glass windows were created by Rudolf and Otto Linnemann from Frankfurt with partly heraldic and partly ornamental painting.
