history

The place Wirschweiler is mentioned in a doubted document for the first time in 975. The church is first mentioned in the 15th century and was consecrated to Saint Catherine before the Reformation . Like the town, it belonged to the Hinteren Grafschaft Sponheim . In 1555 Wirschweiler had its own pastor who converted to the Protestant faith. In 1557, as throughout the county, the Reformation was introduced. In the Thirty Years' War, so many people died from looting and plague that the parishes of Wirschweiler and Allenbach were reunited.

The patron saint of the church, Haus Oberstein, had the church and the community maintained the tower: in 1541 the tower was so dilapidated that it had to be rebuilt in 1582. In 1590 the church was so devastated that it was not like any church . Since the church was described as well-built in 1608 , it must have been built in the meantime. Further renovations followed in 1624, 1670/71, 1683, 1692, 1699. In 1711 today's nave was built. In 1726 a storm tore down a large linden tree that damaged the church. 1745 a wall of the tower collapsed. In 1762–1767, the choir had to be restored. Wirschweiler was until today (2015) the seat of a pastor, who, however, often had to take care of neighboring communities for decades.

Architecture and equipment

altar

The hall church with its squat west tower is essentially a medieval quarry stone building that Hans Vogts classifies as unsightly. The core of the nave is from the late Middle Ages and has been renewed again and again. 1562 with the participation of the Counts of Sponheim , as evidenced by a sandstone coat of arms on the south side. In 1711, the ship was then extended using masonry from the 13th century and at least partially rebuilt. Fragments of sandstone such as ogival window reveals and tracery with noses are bricked up in the walls. The tower was built on old foundations in 1582.

The nave is spanned by a flat-arched wooden barrel from the 18th century. The west gallery and the north gallery, removed in 1957, also come from this. In the choir there is a stone with the coat of arms of the church patron, Count von Oberstein. The tower has three flat-arched sound openings and an octagonal tower spire. A baptismal font made of red sandstone, which was already mentioned in 1560 and served as an altar base for decades, is now used again as a baptismal font.

organ

The organ on the east gallery above the altar dates from around 1900.

Bells

Two historical bells hang in the tower: The inscription on the oldest bell reads: Catherina Heischen Ich. In God Ere Luden I. Dederich von Wanefeld Gos Mich in the year MDXXXII "(1532) . The other historical bell has the following inscription: Kompt, let's go to the Lord's Mountain. Esai. 3. Johan Carl Musculus, pastor of Wirsweiler and Allenbach. JWJM Kirchk. ( Church servants). Mathias Cromel von Trier gos mich anno MDCC "(1700). A third bell had to be delivered during the First World War and was replaced by a new bell in 1927, which is no longer available today.
