In contrast to some of the neighboring communities that became Protestant during the Reformation, Bernkastel and Kues remained Catholic. It was not until the 19th century that the number of Protestant Christians grew, mainly after 1850 when Prussian families of officials moved. Under canon law, Bernkastel-Kues belonged to the parish of Mülheim an der Mosel . Vicar Mertens took over the administration of Bernkastel-Kues on May 12, 1860 as the parish vicariate of Mülheim. Congregation life took place first for three years in a rented prayer room, then in a wagon shed provided by a congregation member. On October 22nd, 1863, the former Gasthaus zur Post in Bernkastel was bought with the help of Gustav Adolf Werk . It was converted into a prayer room , school and parish apartment, but burned down on July 17, 1878. Since the property was claimed by the civil parish after the fire, it could not be rebuilt and no other suitable plot of land could initially be found. Through the mediation of the Trier regional president, a plot of land was acquired in Kues on the left side of the Moselle with little development. Again with the help of Gustav Adolf Werk, a church and parsonage were built on it, the inauguration of which was celebrated on March 17, 1881. The construction was preceded by an architectural competition for which more than 80 designs were submitted and which was won by the Berlin architect Zellner. His design was implemented under the direction of the local district building inspection.

Seven years later, the Protestant parish of Bernkastel-Kues was given the status of a parish. Today, the parish is also involved in pastoral care for patients and employees in the health clinics on the Kueser Plateau.

Architecture and equipment

organ

The Protestant church is a small slate quarry stone building from 1880/81, connected to the rectory, built by Johannes Vollmer and the Berlin architect E. Zellner . The entire neo-Gothic building ensemble consists of the church and the two-storey rectory directly attached to the church. The polygonal choir adjoins the east side of the three-bay nave, and a gabled entrance hall with a square roof tower on the west side. The interior of the church forms a rectangular space with a raised apse. The parish chairs are to the left and right of the aisle. The organ on the west gallery was acquired later.

In March 1945 the church was severely damaged in the fighting at the end of World War II. After the war damage had been repaired, a hall was added to the building ensemble in 1954 and renovated in 1963. In this context, the church was repainted and modernized.

use

The church is the main church of two churches and four preaching sites for the Protestant parish of Bernkastel-Kues. There are regular church services on Sundays and church holidays.
