Church from the outside

The Evangelical Church Sulzbach im Hunsrück is the church of the Evangelical parish Sulzbach in the district of Birkenfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate . The hall building with Romanesque choir tower from the 18th century is equipped with galleries, pulpit and organ from the time it was built.

history

altar

Sulzbach originally belonged with Stipshausen / Schmerlebach and the Bollenbach farm to the Vogtei Rhaunen . Since the 14th century the lords of Schmidtburg were patron saints of the church. The Reformation was introduced in 1560.

In 1744 the Sulzbacher renewed the medieval nave . At that time they received regular services on Sundays and public holidays held by the pastor from neighboring Wickenrodt . When Wickenrodt came to the Oldenburg Principality of Birkenfeld after the Congress of Vienna , Sulzbach was separated and in 1819 connected to the Prussian Rhaunen parish. Sulzbach initially belonged to the Trarbach District Synod, which was divided into the Trarbach and Trier Synods in 1825.

Architecture and equipment

West gallery and ornamentally painted church ceiling

The nave of the hall church, built in 1744, is east facing , 15.40 m long, 7.10 m wide and 4.55 m high. Inside, the keel- arched wooden barrel from the 18th century is painted with ornaments.

The pulpit, without a sound cover, with a rear wall and curved panels on the parapet is from the 2nd half of the 18th century. The wooden west, north and east gallery are designed in the style of the pulpit. The church stalls are also from the time the nave was built .

organ

Stumm organ from 1746

The Stumm organ from 1746 on the east gallery above the altar has a baroque case decorated with carved wings and naturalistic tendrils and a mechanical action . It is the last work created by Johann Michael Stumm , the founder of the organ builder dynasty, and was a gift to his home village in 1746. The organ has 23 registers , which are divided into two manuals and pedal . The original metal pipes of the organ, which had become a victim of requisitions by French revolutionary troops towards the end of the 18th century, were generally replaced around 1820. In 1820 the restoration was carried out by Stumm, in the early 20th century an extension was carried out by Oberlinger . The last restoration was carried out in 1980–1982, similar to the organ in Rhaunen, by the Johannes Klais Orgelbau company , Bonn, with the aim of largely restoring the original condition from 1746.

tower

Tower of the former fortified church

The oldest component is the choir tower of the former fortified church . Due to a dendrochronological dating, the ground floor dates from the year 1367, the upper floor from the year 1473. The tower is crowned by an octagonal helmet placed across the corner.

Bells

Two steel bells from the Bochum Association from 1924 hang in the tower .

use

The parish of Sulzbach is an independent parish and has been parochial with the parishes of Rhaunen - Hausen and Hottenbach - Stipshausen since 2011 . There are seven churches and nine preaching posts in the parish association. A service is celebrated in Sulzbach about once a month. Concerts take place regularly in the church, which are organized by the Stummorgelverein Rhaunen-Sulzbach.
