The Evangelical Church in Mülheim an der Mosel is a baroque hall church with an older Romanesque tower , which was built from 1669 to 1675. It is one of three churches in today's Evangelical Parish in Mülheim an der Mosel. The church is one of the oldest Protestant church buildings in the region. The main sights of the church are the panel paintings on the gallery by Johann Georg Engisch , created between 1700 and 1740, and the Stumm organ from 1890.

history

Mülheim is one of the oldest Protestant parishes in the Rhineland and was part of the County of Veldenz . The Veldenz Counts promoted the Reformation in their territories in the 16th century. After 1815, the immigrant Protestant Christians came to the localities in the vicinity, which are still predominantly Catholic today. Today the Lutheran congregation of Mülheim has 1,400 parish members, 450 of them in the Catholic villages.

organ

Organ and gallery with panels

The organ was built in 1890 by the Stumm family of organ builders from Sulzbach as one of the last organs from the workshop of the brothers Friedrich and Karl Stumm in Rhaunen- Sulzbach. Except for the prospect pipes , which had to be delivered in the First World War, the organ is original. The organ was last overhauled in 1961 and 1995 by master organ builder Heinrich Jud.

Panel paintings

Raising Lazarus from the dead

On the parapets of the three-winged gallery, 26 paintings from the biblical story are arranged. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Birkenfeld court painter Johann Georg Engisch from Kirn created the valuable panel paintings with a pupil.

The pictures painted by Engisch himself are images of the Annunciation, over which a motto is written. They show the painter to be a profound expert on the Bible and Martin Luther's theology . The pictures are arranged in such a way that the Old Testament salvation history is related to the New Testament as a mirror image. Both series of pictures run from two sides towards the Pentecost picture on the choir parapet.

The conclusion on the left is made up of two New Testament images of Lazarus and four images from the Revelation of John on the south side. These do not have the clear contours of the other pictures and pastel colors dominate. The pictures were probably painted by a student of Engisch whose name has not been passed down. Stylistically similar are the pictures above the censor stalls to the left of the chancel and the pictures that used to be in front of the benches of the authorities and are now on the right side of the choir. They describe the ministry of the church leadership and the authorities as ministry “under the word”.

Further equipment

Stained glass window Resurrection of Christ

On the south side of the church there is a tomb for Pastor Happel from 1680, who directed the construction of the church, and his wife Anna Apollonia.

A stained glass window on the south side shows the motif "Resurrection of Jesus Christ". It was donated in 1929 by the Conrad family from Mülheim, who had lost their only son in the First World War.

Bells

Ringing: Half an hour before the service with the medium and small bells
Bell plenary: ringing the bell before the service
Bell tower at night

The church has 3 bells, all of which were cast by the Bochum Association . The great peace bell from 1951, the Luther bell and the Melanchton bell from 1950.

The big peace bell bears the inscription: My sister made a sacrifice in the world war / I came back through sacrifice / a mother let me rise again / to complain, you fallen sons and brothers / God give you back to us forever.

The Luther bell in the middle bears the following inscription: My name is the Luther bell , / to God's glory I ring / to his words I call.

The inscription on the small Melanchton bell reads: Melanchton bell is my name / I help the Luther bell / I admonish peace and harmony.

As part of the open church project, the church is open on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. in the summer months. Organ music is often played at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on these days. Since 2011, the Mülheim parish has had a parish relationship with the Veldenz parish.
