The first portrait drawings were made in 1979, followed by oil paintings inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso in 1981. His first exhibition took place in 1982 in his hometown Hohenwarth in Lower Austria . Since 1989/90 under the motto “The earth has a skin” - abstract images of nature in a mixed technique (earth, stones and sand combined with acrylic or oil paint create a relief-like structure) until 2009.

Stopfer identifies himself with the subject of “ ballet ”; more than half of his work is dedicated to the representation of dancers. In 1989 Leo Stopfer made his first pastel pictures and drawings of the ballerina Mitra Nayeri and, fascinated by the beauty of classical dance, chose ballet as the main subject of his art. He created numerous paintings with the greatest ballerinas of the 20th and 21st centuries. These include dancers such as Diana Vishneva ( Mariinsky Theater ), Olga Smirnowa and Evgenia Obraztsova from the Bolshoi Theater , Vladimir Malakhov , Maria Abashova ( Boris Eifman Ballet), Maria Yakovleva ( Vienna State Ballet ) and Isabelle Ciaravola and Ludmila Pagliero ( Paris Opera ) .

Exhibitions

Since his first exhibition in 1982, Stopfer's work has been shown in London , Vienna , Berlin , Moscow and Luxembourg , among others . In 2017 he was the first artist to be invited to work in Gustav Klimt's original studio in the Klimt Villa in Vienna. Here he created numerous drawings and portraits of women under the title “My Muses”. This series of works was presented in a solo exhibition in the Klimt Villa in May 2018.

His current solo exhibition in 2019 will take place in the Vienna State Opera . Here his works are shown with dancers from the Vienna State Opera.
