Leo Wieland

Leo Wieland (born March 12, 1950 in Mengen ) is a German journalist and book author. He worked as a correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for Spain , Portugal and the Maghreb .

Life

Wieland studied political science , economics and history at the University of Hamburg and graduated in the early 1970s with a degree in political science. In 1973 he started working as a journalist for the newsroom of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and then continued his education for a semester at Harvard University , specializing in "International Relations". From 1977 to 1984 he was a foreign correspondent in Moscow , then until 2002 in Washington, DC He then moved to Madrid , where he reported for the FAZ on Spain, Portugal and the countries of the Maghreb . Leo Wieland retired at the end of 2016.

Book publications

Wieland published the books “Russia Reportages” (1986) and “America Reportages” (1989) in the Frankfurter Societät Verlag .

Awards

Wieland was awarded the Columbus Journalist Prize in 1994 and the Karl Klasen Journalist Prize in 1997 . On January 11, 2016, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany "for his journalistic achievements in the field of foreign policy" from the hands of the German Ambassador to Spain, Peter Tempel . In the laudation, Tempel emphasized the importance of Wieland's reporting and his comments during the Cold War period and the recent economic and financial crisis. Tempel said literally: "Your expertise is valued, your analyzes have weight in political operations."
