Leo from Elliot

Nicolaus Leo von Elliot (* 1816 in London ? † 1890 in Saint-Gilles / Sint-Gillis ) was a German painter , draftsman and lithographer .

Life

Presumably born in London, the family moved to Darmstadt in 1822 . Before 1833 he presumably received lessons at the drawing school of the Darmstadt gallery inspector Franz Hubert Müller . In 1836 Elliot began studying at the Grand Ducal Drawing School in Darmstadt, a. a. with August Lucas . In 1837/38 he studied at the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf , a. a. with Carl Sohn . Around 1841 Elliot went on a study trip to South Tyrol and / or Northern Italy, and from 1841 to 1845 a stay in Paris. There he was a student in the teaching ateliers of Paul Delaroche and Charles Gleyre . He received his graphic training from Caspar Gsell . From 1848 Elliot lived in Frankfurt am Main, he works as a photo reporter for the Illustrierte Zeitung (Leipzig) and L'Illustration (Paris) on the revolutionary events in Baden, Frankfurt a. M., Mainz and Vienna. In 1849 the politically motivated move to the USA, where he was based in Philadelphia as a graphic artist and press illustrator . In 1853 he moved to Belgium, from 1856 he was a permanent picture correspondent for the Illustrierte Zeitung (Leipzig) and Le Monde illustré (Paris) for Belgium and the Netherlands, based in Brussels. In 1870/71 he was the official reporter for Le Monde illustré for the French campaign ; further reports, u. a. to the world exhibitions of 1873 in Vienna, 1876 in Philadelphia and 1878 in Paris.
