Leolyn Dana Wilgress

Leolyn Dana Wilgress (born October 20, 1892 in Vancouver , † July 21, 1969 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian diplomat .

Life

Wilgress joined the Trade Commissioner Service in 1914 . He was then accredited in Russia and Romania . From 1922 to 1932 he was Canadian trade commissioner in Hamburg . In 1932 he became head of the Commercial Intelligence Service in Ottawa . He was a key trade negotiator in the 1930s. In 1940 he became Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry. In 1942 he was sent to Moscow as envoy ; In 1944 the legation was upgraded to an embassy.

After the end of World War II, he was ambassador to the Swiss Confederation in Bern from 1947 to 1948 and representative of the Canadian government to the United Nations in Geneva from 1948 to 1949 . In 1949 he moved to London as High Commissioner , from June 1952 to August 1953 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Foreign Minister of Canada. 1953 to 1958 he was the permanent representative of Canada to the OECD (from June 9, 1953) and NATO (from September 6, 1953) in Paris .
