The Leon-Jessel Square is a square in Berlin district of Wilmersdorf , near the subway station Fehrbellinerplatz and Prussia parks . The square has been named after the composer and Nazi victim Leon Jessel since May 21, 1985 . In the vernacular of the place is due to the central mushroom sculpture also mushroom place called.
history
The square was redesigned in 1984 by paving. In the course of this, the water mushroom fountain sculpture by Emanuel Scharfenberg was erected at the same time . In 2002, the square was greened by residents and members of the association Mit einem Kiez e. V. instead. In 2015, on the initiative of the Mit einem Kiez e. V. set up a borrowed book box on Leon-Jessel-Platz. On November 19, 2018, the borrowed book box was replaced by a book cell by the association Mithaben im Kiez e. V. replaced. To an old was phone booth of Telekom bought and then from the two tape-type transformed -Künstlern Felix Bittner and Joshua Vietinghoff Schell.
Fountain sculpture water mushroom
The water mushroom fountain sculpture by Manuel Scharfenberg was erected on the occasion of the redesign of the square. The sculpture consists of a fountain in the form of an oversized tubular mushroom made of bronze, where water flows over his hat into a flat, paved fountain bowl. Because of the water, the sculpture is particularly popular with children.

The square is characterized by the fountain sculpture in its center. Another design feature of the square is the red brick paving, created with the help of the sculptor Emanuel Scharfenberg. There are benches painted in bright colors on the square. On the south side of the square there is a sign with the name of the square in Gothic script , which was put up when the square was redesigned. Next to the sign is the book box that was installed in 2018. An advertising pillar is integrated into the design of the square . The square is delimited to the street side by curbs that are not let in.
