Leon Terence Anthony Cort (born September 11, 1979 in Southwark ) is a former English football player who was mostly used in defense . Cort is of Guyanese descent and the younger brother of Carl Cort , who was also a professional footballer.
Career
Born in south London, Cort played for Dulwich Hamlet before being signed to Millwall FC by Mick Beard . But he couldn't start a real career at Millwall. After four years with Forest Green Rovers and Stevenage Borough on loan, he moved to Southend United . Here he played over 130 games without being canceled due to suspensions or injuries. In May 2004, Hull City coach Peter Taylor expressed interest in signing. So there was a transfer free of charge in the summer. In 2006 he switched to Crystal Palace , which cost around one million euros for the services of Cort. He quickly became a crowd favorite and was voted Player of the Year 2007. Cort finally started the season badly and was then ousted by Neil Warnock , which is why Cort borrowed to Stoke City . The purchase option stipulated in the loan agreement was finally drawn by Stoke and made Cort the most expensive player in the club's history.
Cort stayed in Stoke until the end of 2009. After he had been used less and less, he left the club in early 2010 for Burnley FC . With the club he rose from the Premier League at the end of the 2009/10 season . For the 2010/11 season he was loaned to Preston North End . In the summer of 2011 he moved - initially on loan - to Charlton Athletic , which later signed him permanently. He ended his career here in 2014.
Others
Cort's statistics on maps have a peculiarity. Since April 2004, when he was still playing for Southend, the player had not received a yellow card until his warning in the League Cup on August 26, 2009 against Leyton Orient .
