Carl Edward Richard Cort (born November 1, 1977 in Southwark ) is a former English football player of Guyanese origin. The striker was considered one of the greatest talents in English football in the late 1990s, was at times hailed as the "new Pelé " and moved to Newcastle United in 2000 for seven million pounds . After frequent injuries, he has played mainly for low-class clubs since 2004.

Athletic career

Carl Cort, whose brother Leon , who was two years his junior, also became a professional player in the Premier League , began his footballing career in his hometown at Wimbledon FC and gained his first experience at the fourth division club Lincoln City at the beginning of 1997 , where he loaned out for a month in February 2007 had been. Before the end of the 1996/97 season, he came on April 9, 2007 for Wimbledon to a 20-minute short stint against Aston Villa (0: 2) in the top English division, was on September 13, 2007 in a 3: 1 away win in the reigning runner-up Newcastle United for the first time in the starting line-up and at the same time scored his first Premier League goal. The English U-21 team quickly became aware of the fast, technically adept and goal-scoring “Shooting Star”; There he scored eight goals in twelve international matches, making him one of the most successful English U-21 players to this day. Cort played three full seasons at Wimbledon FC in the Premier League, scored 15 competitive goals for the "Dons" in his last season in 1999/2000 and moved to Newcastle United in the summer of 2000 for the high transfer fee of seven million pounds Sir Bobby Robson was trained.

After just a few minutes he scored his first goal in the first home game for the "Magpies" against Derby County . This promising start, however, suffered an early setback after just five missions; Cort had to undergo knee surgery early on and did not return to the team until March 2001, where he gave an impression of his potential with five goals in ten games. In the period that followed, Cort continued to struggle with his knee problems, as the joint continued to be unstable in the 2001/02 season - extensive treatments, including those from the US specialist Richard Steadman , were on the agenda at the time. He only played eight league games from March 2002 until the end of the season, after which he only played once in the subsequent 2002/03 season in addition to two short appearances in the Premier League and the Champions League (3-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen ) League Cup went the full distance. Cort fought increasingly for the connection to the first division team and after the fitness was somewhat restored, the club management drew a line under the "Personnel Cort" and agreed in January 2004 to a sale for two million pounds to the first division competitor Wolverhampton Wanderers .

With five goals in the remaining games of the season, Cort could no longer avoid the relegation of the "Wolves", but his sporting achievements consolidated in the Football League Championship with 16 goals in 40 games of the 2004/05 season. Also at the beginning of the 2005/06 season he was successful with nine goals in the first eleven encounters, before he only scored twice after injury setbacks until the end of the season. Ten more goalless championship games in the 2006/07 season later, the Wolverhampton Wanderers management team let their former hopefuls go in May 2007 and only a short time later they signed a new two-year contract with second division rivals Leicester City . With the exception of a remarkable goal in the 3-4 league cup defeat against Chelsea , it was clear by the end of the year that he was not living up to expectations. At the end of December 2007 he fell victim to a "major cleaning action" by coach Ian Holloway , was put on the transfer list and left the club on January 11, 2008 "by mutual agreement". On January 31, 2008, the Spanish third division UD Marbella announced the commitment of Carl Cort.

Not even a year later, Cort returned to England, joined the second division Norwich City on December 9, 2008 and scored his first goal for the "Canaries" on February 3, 2009 at his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers (3: 3) . After the relegation of Norwich City to Football League One in the same year, the parties involved agreed to an early termination of Cort's contract. From then on, he tried in vain at a trial training with the Wycombe Wanderers , but then found a new employer in August 2009 in third division club Brentford , who initially employed him for a period of five months. The contract was extended after the end of the 2009/10 season and a year later.

From 2012 to 2014 he played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League .
