Leon van der Torre

Leendert (Leon) Willem Nicolaas van der Torre (born March 18, 1968 in Rotterdam , Netherlands ) is a computer science professor at the University of Luxembourg and head of the Individual and Collective Reasoning (ICR) research group in the Computer Science and Communications (CSC) research unit. Leon van der Torre is an internationally renowned researcher in deontic logic and multi-agent systems and founder of the CSC Robotic research laboratory . Since March 2016 he has been the head of the Computer Science and Communication research unit .

biography

Leon van der Torre studied computer science at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Faculty of Economics. After completing his master's degree in 1992, he completed his PhD in computer science with Yao-Hua Tan in 1997 . His dissertation deals with the application of deontic logic in computer science and the relationship between deontic logic and non-monotonic logic . His main research topics are logics for artificial intelligence and computer science.

After positions at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science in Saarbrücken , at the CNRS-IRIT in Toulouse , at the CWI Amsterdam and at the Free University of Amsterdam , van der Torre became Professor of Intelligent Systems at the University of Luxembourg in January 2006 . He is currently also head of the Computer Science and Communication research department at the University of Luxembourg. As of March 2012, 12 doctoral students had completed their doctorates under his supervision, and 10 of his former research assistants have permanent positions in research or university teaching.

research

After researching qualitative decision theory , van der Torre turned to cognitive theory and agent theory. Together with colleagues from the Free University of Amsterdam he developed the BOID agent architecture , together with David Makinson the research area of input / output logics and together with Guido Boella created the game theory approach to normative multi -agent systems . He initiated the scientific workshops CoOrg, ROLES and NORMAS. In 2015 he was appointed an ECCAI Fellow .

Furthermore, van der Torre is the editor responsible for deontic logic of the Journal of Logic and Computation , as well as an editorial member of the Logic Journal of the IGPL and the IfCoLog Journal of Logics and their Applications , head of the steering committee of the scientific conference DEON, member of the steering committee of CLIMA and Editor of the manuals on deontic logic and normative systems.

Personal

Since 2000 Leon van der Torre has been married to the artist Egberdien van der Torre - van der Peijl, with whom he has two sons.
