Leonard Berkowitz

Leonard "Len" Berkowitz (born August 11, 1926 ; † January 3, 2016 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American social psychologist who dealt with human aggression .

Life and work

His Ph.D. in psychology he received from the University of Michigan in 1951 .

Berkowitz used a cognitive-neo-associationist approach. In 1974 he presented his frustration-fixation hypothesis (a further development of the frustration-aggression hypothesis ). Here he differentiates between instrumental and impulsive aggression.

In 1993 Berkowitz was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Most recently he was Vilas Research Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison .
