Leonard Edward Slatkin (* 1. September 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) is a US -American conductor .

life and work

Slatkin was born into a musical family - his father Felix Slatkin was a violinist, conductor and founder of the Hollywood String Quartet , and his mother Eleanor Aller was the cellist of this quartet.

Slatkin first studied at Indiana University Bloomington and Los Angeles City College and began his musical career as a pianist. He later switched to the Juilliard School , where Jean Paul Morel taught him conducting. He made his successful debut as a conductor in 1966 with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of New York. In 1968 he received an assistant position with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra . He stayed there until 1977 when he became conductor of the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1979 he returned to St. Louis as chief conductor . He held this position until 1996 and then took over the direction of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC (until 2008).

In 2000 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra . He held this position until September 11, 2004, the 110th Last Night of the Proms . In 2005 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and is Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra .

Slatkin was and is also active as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras around the world. In Germany, he worked with the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Munich Philharmonic , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and regularly with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin together.

In 1992, Slatkin was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Leonard Slatkin was married to the soprano Linda Hohenfeld since 1986 and they have a son, Daniel. He has been married to the composer Cindy McTee since 2011 .

Slatkin has conducted an extensive repertoire and has garnered greater recognition for his interpretations of 20th century American music and works by British composers.

His own compositions, including The Raven (1971) for narrator and orchestra (based on the poem by Edgar Allan Poe ), are little known.
