Leonas Virginijus Papirtis

Leonas Virginijus Papirtis (born October 24, 1949 in Gargždai ) is a Lithuanian lawyer, lawyer , president of the Lithuanian Bar Association , former politician (deputy minister).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1967 in Varėna , Leonas Virginijus Papirtis completed a degree in law at the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University and from 1973 to 1976 an apprenticeship at Moscow University . In 1977 he received his doctorate in Moscow on the subject of "Law and Politics : Relationship and Interaction" and became a candidate for law. Until 1983 he was an assistant, university professor and senior professor at the law faculty in Vilnius. From 1984 to 1990 he headed the legal department of the Soviet-Lithuanian Aviation Authority . From 1990 to 1991 he was head of the subdivision of the Law Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the Lietuvos mokslų akademija , from 1991 to 1994 he was head of the subdivision of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs , adviser and then deputy foreign minister .

In 1995 Leonas Virginijus Papirtis was admitted to the bar. Papirtis founded his own law firm and has been with the Leonas Virginijus Papirtis law firm ever since. His main focus is criminal law . Papirtis achieved temporary international fame in 2004 when he took over the defense of Bertrand Cantat in his trial for manslaughter committed against the actress Marie Trintignant (1962-2003).

Since April 17, 2008, Papirtis has headed the Lithuanian Bar Association (his predecessor was Rimas Andrikis ). He teaches as a lecturer at the Civil Justice Institute of the Mykolo Romerio universitetas . Papirtis is a board member of the Lithuanian Lawyers Association , a member of the editorial board of the legal journal " Justitia ", head of the editorial board of the magazine " Lietuvos advokatūra ", member of the council of Lietuvos žmogaus teisių centras .
