Leonhard Haas (archivist)

Leonhard Haas (born September 28, 1908 in Emmenbrücke ; † June 20, 2000 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss archivist and for many years head of the Swiss Federal Archives .

Life

Leonhard Haas was born in Emmenbrücke in 1908 as the son of Josef Leonhard and Katharina Haas. After graduating from high school, he studied history and literature in Lausanne , Paris , Zurich and Vienna from 1929 to 1934 .

Leonhard Haas was married to Marie Helene (nee Schäfer) and died in Lucerne at the age of 91.

Professional background

At the Swiss Federal Archives he was first deputy from 1935 to 1954 and then director from 1954 to 1973. In addition, he started a scientific career with the habilitation in 1951 at the University of Freiburg i. Üe. In 1954 he followed a call from the ETH Zurich and was appointed private lecturer for modern history with a special focus on Russian and Soviet Russian history. In 1973 Haas was appointed adjunct professor. In 1978 he left this position.

In addition to his university duties and his work in the Swiss Federal Archives, he was a member of several scientific missions in Europe, the USA and Russia from 1949 to 1970 as well as scientific committees, for example of the Indian Historical Records Commission from 1969 to 1976 .

Act

As director of the Swiss Federal Archives, he pushed ahead with fundamental reforms .

As an author, he wrote numerous works, including on the Russo-Japanese War and Lenin .
