Leonid Gawrilowitsch Ossipenko ( Russian Леони́д Гаври́лович Осипе́нко ; born May 11, 1920 in Krindachivka , Donetsk Province, Ukrainian SSR ; † March 14, 1997 in Obninsk , Russian Federation ) was a Soviet Rear Admiral and participant in the Second World War . During the Cold War he was in command of the first Soviet nuclear submarine, the K-3 Leninsky Komsomol .

Life

In December 1941 he graduated from the Higher Frunze Naval School, then became second in command of a submarine and took part in the Kerch-Feodosia operation . From February 1942 he served on boats Щ-203 and Щ-202 of the Shcha class in the Black Sea Fleet .

As captain of the 1st rank he was in command of the first Soviet nuclear submarine K-3 Leninsky Komsomol and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the title Hero of the Soviet Union by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on July 23, 1959 . Subsequently, Osipenko, promoted to Rear Admiral, headed the Obninsk Nuclear Submarine Crew Training Center, replacing MA Sokolov , a veteran of the Great Patriotic War . He headed the training center for exactly 20 years and was made an honorary citizen of Obninsk. He spent the last years of his life sick and was supported by his wife Valentina Andrejewna, with whom he had lived since 1973.
