Leopold Dumonceau

Karel Leopold Dumonceau (born December 9, 1825 in Maastricht , Kingdom of the United Netherlands ; † May 11, 1893 ) was a Dutch portrait , history and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Dumonceau was the second born of four sons of Jan Desire Dumonceau (1796-1863) and Maria Catharina, née Bragard (1798-1861). He grew up in Maastricht. In 1846 and 1847 he was a student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There, Karl Ferdinand Sohn taught him in 1846 in the "plaster class" and in 1847 in the "2. Class". Dumonceau settled in Maastricht as a painter. In 1860 he became master of the Masonic Lodge "La Persévérance" there. In 1851 he lived in Paris , in 1852 in Florence . In 1864 he moved to the Belgian Channel coast, where he lived in Heist with his wife, the English composer and painter Betty White . His works, mainly portraits and genre paintings, but also Christian representations and still lifes, he exhibited in larger cities in the Netherlands.
