Leopold Küchler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leopold Küchler (* 1910 ; † 1984 ) was an Austrian chemist (technical chemistry, nuclear chemistry, macromolecular chemistry).

Kuchler studied at the University of Vienna and was at Hermann Mark in macromolecular chemistry doctorate (his dissertation topic suggested Franz Patat on). In 1936 he became an assistant to Arnold Eucken at the Institute for Physical Chemistry in Göttingen, where he completed his habilitation in 1943. His 1951 book on the kinetics of polymerization was a standard work at the time. In 1948 he went to Hoechst AG , where he headed the physical development laboratories in the chemical process engineering department and was responsible for the introduction of computer control to optimize production processes. In 1957 he became an adjunct professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He also dealt intensively with industrial chemical processes in nuclear technology (production of heavy water, reprocessing of nuclear fuel rods with an experimental reprocessing plant). He was chairman of the working group for the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuels of the German Atomic Energy Commission.

With Karl Winnacker he edited a multi-volume work on technical chemistry.

He was on the board of directors of the German Bunsen Society , on the board of trustees of the Dechema Institute and chairman of the technical reactions working group of Dechema.

In 1968 he received the Wilhelm Exner Medal .
