The Dechema Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology (spelling DECHEMA) is a non-profit, registered association based in Frankfurt am Main. It currently has more than 5,800 natural scientists, engineers, companies, organizations and institutes as members. The task of Dechema is to accompany the development of chemical technologies and processes and to process new findings from research and development for practical use.

1926 was the " De funnel Society for chem Steam A pparatewesen" was founded. The aim of the association is to promote and help shape technical progress in chemical engineering, biotechnology, environmental protection and related disciplines; for this he is active nationally, European and internationally. The association sees itself as an interface between science, business, the state and the public. Its activities include the organization of conferences, workshops, colloquia and advanced training courses as well as research funding on a national and European level. Together with DECHEMA Exhibition GmbH, which was founded in 2012, he organizes ACHEMA as the world's leading trade fair for the process industries and AchemAsia in China.

Dechema House - new building

The Biotechnology Association is dedicated to promoting science and technology in all areas of biotechnology. It pursues the following tasks and goals:

  • Promotion of the reputation of biotechnology in the public through the development and publication of positions and statements based on scientific knowledge
  • Creation of subject-specific position papers with the aim of designing national and European research funding programs
  • Promotion of innovation and technology transfer with the aim of developing and realizing industrially usable biotechnological products, processes and services

The Biotechnology Association is a member of the Association for Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany .

Future forum for biotechnology The future forum for biotechnology was founded in 2002. Its members are around 20 young academics and industry scientists who cover a wide range of subjects.

The Association of German Biotechnology Companies (VBU), which was founded in 1996 and currently has around 160 member companies, also belongs to Dechema. It is dedicated to promoting science and technology and converting research results into innovations and cooperates with other national and international organizations in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and knowledge and technology transfer.

ProcessNet

ProcessNet is a platform for chemical process engineering, chemical technology and chemical engineering. Here scientific questions as well as new technical applications are discussed and further developed by experts from science, research and industry.

The initiative was founded in 2007 by DECHEMA and the VDI- Fachgesellschaft process engineering and chemical engineering ( VDI-GVC ). The sponsors are DECHEMA and the Association of German Engineers. The technical work takes place in specialist communities. All the activities of the committees, specialist groups and working groups of both institutions are brought together here in order to solve problems at the interfaces between various specialist areas.

Eight specialist communities have established themselves:

  • Chemical reaction engineering
  • Fluid dynamics and separation technology
  • Particle technology and product design
  • Process, apparatus and system technology
  • Plant and process safety (until February 2012 safety technology)
  • Sustainable Production, Energy and Resources (SuPER)
  • Materials, construction, service life
  • Education and innovation

The two sponsoring companies contribute additional skills. At DECHEMA, in addition to the organizational infrastructure and its research funding activities, it is the biotechnology activities; at the VDI, it is above all the 17 VDI specialist societies that are at home in other sectors and represent partners for chemistry. Participation in ProcessNet is open to all members of DECHEMA and VDI-GVC.

The DECHEMA committees and the VDI-GVC technical committees are integrated into the ProcessNet specialist communities.

German Society for Catalysis

The German Catalysis Society GeCatS is the central advocacy group for German catalysis and an information platform for catalysis research and application. The activities of the supporting companies Dechema, VDI-GVC as well as the Society of German Chemists , DBG and the German Scientific Society for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal (DGMK) in the field of catalysis were thus merged. The company covers the entire spectrum from surface catalysis to biocatalysis and includes all development steps from basic research to process development. Membership in the German Catalysis Society is open to every member of the five supporting companies without any additional contribution. The society currently has over 1,000 members. The company started its work on September 8, 2008 and is also continuing the activities of the ConNeCat catalysis competence network .

Achema and AchemAsia

The international exhibition congress for chemical engineering, environmental protection and biotechnology Achema takes place every three years in Frankfurt am Main. In 2018, around 3,700 exhibitors and 145,000 visitors took part in the international event for suppliers to the chemical industry and sectors of the material-converting industry. The topics range from chemical plant and apparatus engineering and process automation to microprocess engineering, laboratory and analysis technology or catalysis and surface processes, membrane processes and safety technology to water technology, nanotechnology and renewable energy sources. Up until 2009, a field of innovation within the Achema range of topics was regularly highlighted in the ACHEMA special show; since 2009 focal topics have been particularly highlighted, which usually span several exhibition groups. The congress with over 800 lectures deals with topics of chemical process engineering and biotechnology, which are on the threshold of implementation in practice or take up questions from practice. The exhibition and the congress are thematically closely intertwined.
In order to take into account the fast pace and growth strength of the markets outside Europe, especially Asia, Dechema has been organizing AchemAsia since 1989, which is also held every three years and has meanwhile become the leading event for the process industry in Southeast Asia. AchemAsia will take place in Shanghai for the first time in 2019.

Research funding

To promote research in the fields of chemical engineering, biotechnology and environmental technology, Dechema uses both its own and external funding. The association promotes joint industrial research projects (with funds from the BMWi through the Working Group on Industrial Research Associations (AiF)), manages the Max Buchner Research Foundation on a voluntary basis, through which scholarships can be applied for, and awards prizes for outstanding achievements in research and studies be appreciated. Dechema analyzes current developments and draws attention to them with studies and position papers; she coordinates networks and large projects (research and project coordination). The committees represent an important basis for all these activities. Dechema works closely with national funding organizations ( DFG , BMBF , VW Foundation, DBU , Agency for Renewable Raw Materials (FNR)) and the European Commission .

The Dechema and ProcessNet award, among other things, the DECHEMA medal , the DECHEMA price , the Alwin Mittasch price , the Willy Hager medal (water treatment, wastewater chemistry), the Hellmuth Fischer medal for electrochemistry / corrosion research, the Emil Kirschbaum Medal for thermal process engineering, the Otto Roelen Medal for catalysis research, the Willi Keim Prize for Advanced Fluids and the Hanns Hofmann Prize (Young Talent Prize in Chemical Reaction Technology).

DECHEMA Research Institute Foundation (DFI)

The Dechema Research Institute Foundation was established on March 1, 2012 by a group of industrial and private donors. The Karl Winnacker Institute of Dechema, which had existed since 1961, was incorporated into it.

Dechema publishes and sells electronic information systems, databases, publications and some special software tools.

Databases

  • Detherm ( DETHERM ) is an electronic database for thermodynamic and thermophysical data on pure substances and substance mixtures. It contains u. a. information about

    • Thermodynamic properties
    • Transport properties
    • Interface properties
    • Electrolyte data.
Substantial parts of Detherm come from the Dortmund database , but other data sources have also been incorporated, including a. ( Electrolyte database Regensburg ), Infotherm (from FIZ Chemie ), C-DATA (Institute for Chemical Technology, Prague, Czech Republic) and Böhlen basic database (formerly GDR). Detherm is sold by Dechema via an internet service and as an installable database. Since Dechema is a non-profit organization, the income is fully reinvested.
  • DIPPR 801: The " Design Institute for Physical Properties " (DIPPR) is a Technical Society of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). DIPPR is one of the world's best and best-known sources for critically evaluated, thermodynamic material data. DIPPR 801 is the basic substance database created by DIPPR. The database contains 33 thermodynamic constants and 15 temperature-dependent properties (in the form of equation parameters ) for currently 1891 industrially relevant substances (status 05/2007).
  • Chemsafe: The numerical database Chemsafe contains evaluated safety parameters of flammable gases, liquids and dusts for fire and explosion protection.
  • CEABA-VtB is a literature database for chemical engineering and biotechnology from 1966 to 2010. It currently contains around 700,000 papers.
  • NANOapplied provides nanotechnology abstracts for chemical engineers and process technicians .
  • EVENT records descriptions of non- reportable , security-related events.
  • Dechema Data Preparation Package : Visualization and regression of thermodynamic models and material data
  • IK-CAPE thermodynamics package : calculation of thermodynamic material data and state variables

Dechemax student competition

The Dechemax student competition for grades 7 to 11 aims to encourage students' interest in science. It has been held annually since 2000. In 2013/14 over 10,000 students from around 600 schools across Germany took part. Events for schoolchildren are also held as part of Achema.
